La selezione include il superamento con punteggi brillanti di tests standard (GRE, GRE a soggetto, TOEFL per citarne alcuni), elevati voti di laurea (un 4-year college degree e’ il requisito minimo, cio’ corrisponde ad una laurea vecchio ordinamento o una laurea magistrale 3+2; ogni universita’ gestisce autonomamente il riconoscimento del titolo italiano; in rari casi la procedura e’ appaltata ad agenzie private), esperienze rilevanti (ricerca, insegnamento, field work), buone lettere che attestino attitudine allo studio/ricerca/insegnamento, un statement of purpose letter convincente. E la selezione e’ solo il primo passo di una avventura che, nel caso di un PhD., potra’ durare anche 6-7 anni. Il consiglio e’ non perdere tempo: imparare subito l’inglese (non servono corsi costosi, basta buona volonta’, creativita’, una radio -o internet streams- ed una grammatica) e cominciare a fare domanda quando si e’ vicini a terminare la laurea (6 mesi prima della discussione della tesi e’ OK). Prima si esce dall’Italia, maggiori saranno i vantaggi di una esperienza internazionale e minori le frustrazioni con l’impantanato e deprimente sistema universitario Italiano. Ritornare poi pero’ e’ un opzione aperta a pochissimo “eletti”. But hey, the world is big!
